Why Dancing Through the Summer Matters More Than You Think

By Courteney Brickell, Founder & Artistic Director of The Concrete Rose Dance Academy

When school lets out for summer, it's tempting to hit the pause button on everything—including dance. After all, kids deserve a break, right?

Absolutely.

But here's something many families don't realize: taking a break doesn't have to mean stopping completely.

Summer is actually one of the best times for dancers to grow. Without homework, testing, and busy school schedules, dancers have the opportunity to focus on developing their skills, building confidence, and simply enjoying movement in a fun, relaxed environment.

Progress Doesn't Have to Pause

Think about learning to ride a bike.

If you practiced every week for nine months and then didn't touch your bike for three months, you probably wouldn't forget how to ride—but you might feel a little rusty.

Dance works the same way.

Skills like flexibility, balance, coordination, turns, leaps, and muscle memory are built through consistency. When dancers continue moving during the summer, they return in the fall stronger, more confident, and ready to learn new material instead of spending weeks catching back up.

Even attending one class or camp each week can make a tremendous difference.

Summer Builds Stronger Dancers

During the regular dance season, our focus is often on choreography, performances, and preparing for recital.

Summer allows us to slow down and concentrate on the foundations that make great dancers.

This is the perfect time to improve:

  • Flexibility

  • Turns

  • Leaps

  • Kicks

  • Balance

  • Strength

  • Musicality

  • Confidence

  • Performance quality

These are the skills that help dancers shine once recital season arrives.

Confidence Grows Through Practice

One of the greatest gifts dance gives children isn't just technique—it's confidence.

Every new skill mastered reminds a dancer that hard work pays off.

Every leap that gets higher.Every pirouette that becomes steadier.Every stretch that reaches just a little farther.

Those small victories build confidence that carries into school, friendships, and everyday life.

Keeping Kids Active During Summer

Summer often means more screen time and less structured activity.

Dance gives children a healthy way to stay active while having fun.

They're exercising without even realizing it because they're laughing, creating, moving, and making memories with friends.

Regular movement also helps improve:

  • Coordination

  • Flexibility

  • Balance

  • Strength

  • Endurance

  • Focus

Most importantly, it helps children build healthy habits they'll carry with them for years to come.

Friendships Continue to Bloom

One of my favorite parts of summer camps is watching friendships grow.

Without the pressure of performances or school, dancers have more opportunities to connect, encourage one another, and simply enjoy being kids together.

Some of the strongest friendships in our studio have started during summer classes.

Summer Doesn't Have to Be Serious

Many parents worry that summer dance means intense training.

Not at all.

Summer is meant to be fun.

Whether it's dancing at a Barbie-themed camp, singing and moving during our preschool camps, improving flexibility, or learning exciting new skills, our goal is simple:

Keep kids moving, learning, smiling, and growing.

Small Investments Lead to Big Growth

Growth doesn't always happen through giant leaps.

Sometimes it happens one stretch at a time. One class at a time. One encouraging teacher at a time.

Those small moments add up.

By the time fall classes begin, dancers who stayed active over the summer often return with stronger technique, greater confidence, and an excitement to keep learning.

Our Philosophy at The Concrete Rose Dance Academy

At The Concrete Rose Dance Academy, we believe every child has the potential to bloom.

Our motto is:

"You can bloom anything with time, attention, intention, and passion."

Summer is simply another opportunity to water the seeds we've planted all season long.

Whether your dancer joins us for one camp, one workshop, or several weeks of classes, every experience is another chance to grow—not only as a dancer, but as a confident young person.

We hope to spend part of your family's summer dancing, laughing, learning, and blooming together.

We'll see you in the studio! 🌹
